The aim of the lecture is to teach the basics of systems theory and control engineering. We learn how to describe electrical, mechanical, optical, chemical or thermal processes in the form of dynamic systems uniformly, analyze the characteristics of these systems, and learn methods for their targeted modulation by sensor-actuator systems (controllers).

We'll start with the modeling of dynamic systems, consider the analytic solution of linear time-invariant differential equations, introduce the impulse and step response, analyze the step response of some commonly occurring systems, introduce the Laplace transform, learn different methods for the preparation of linear transfer functions, discuss stability of the closed loop and learn basic methods for the design of a linear controller for single-input single-output (SISO) systems. The course consists of three hours per week lecture and a SWS exercises.

**Special notices**

The exam will take place on **23.09.17** at **10:00 - 12:30** in building 101 in rooms 026 and 010/14.

**Lecture schedule**

The lecture will be held at the Technical Faculty of the University of Freiburg in Building 101, HS 00-036.

- Mondays, 10:15-12:00
- Thursdays, 08:15-10:00

#### Lecture slot modifications and cancellations

Since the course consists of 3 SWS, but is organized in a four-hours-lecture-per-week rythm, the following lecture slots are modified or cancelled:

- Thursday April 24, 2017: in the second part of the lecture there is a MATLAB introduction.
- Thursday May 11, 2017: in the second part of the lecture there is a MATLAB tutorial.
- Monday June 19, 2017: no lecture, MATLAB tutorial.
- Thursday June 22, 2017: no lecture after the micro-exam
- Thursday June 29, 2017: no lecture
- Thursday July 13, 2017: no lecture, there will be handed out a test exam with possibility of questions.
- Thursday July 27, 2017: summary of the lecture and get-together afterwards!

**Lecture notes**

The lecture notes are available here:

**Final exam**

The final score is calculated at 100% of the final exam. The final exam is "closed-book", so there are no auxiliary utensils except pencils and blank paper allowed. It may, however, exactly one sheet of A4 paper be taken with two pages handwritten described as a formulary. The questions are partly multiple choice, as in the micro exams, some issues with text responses, as in the exercise sheets.

**Admission to exam**

Admission to the final exam will be obtained when the following criteria are met

**Passing the Exercises:**Each exercise sheet is assessed by the acquired points in percent. In the 11 exercise sheets an average of at least 50% of the points must be achieved.

Example: A student has acquired 3 times 90% and 8 times 35% of the points, thus the average is 50%. The exercise is passed by.**Passing the micro exams:**The micro exams are evaluated by the acquired points in percent. In the three best of four micro exams at least 50% of the points must be achieved on average.

**Exercises**

There are four exercise groups, three every Tuesday 12:00-13:00:

- Group 1: Room 101 SR 01 016, Patrick Caspari
- Group 2: Room 101 SR 01 018, Alexander Petrov
- Group 3: Room 101 SR 00 010, Peter Hofmeier

And one every Friday 12:00-13:00

- Group 4: Room 101 SR 01 013, Fabien Jenne

You can hand in your solution of the current exercise sheet at the Monday lecture (BEFORE the lecture begins) or, if you want to hand it in before, you can throw it into the indicated box in the systems control and optimization laboratory (Lehrstuhl für Systemtheorie, Regelungstechnik und Optimierung) in building 102, 1st floor, Anbau.

**Matlab**

You will need MATLAB for the exercises. Details on how to obtain a free MATLAB license and how to install the program can be found here:

https://www.rz.uni-freiburg.de/services/beschaffung/software/matlab-landeslizenz

For the lecture and exercises you will need only the "Control System Toolbox".

You can find a basic tutorial for Matlab here.
